Every child deserves a voice in court.

We're here to help.

Richmond Guardian Ad Litem Attorney

If you are involved in a custody or visitation case or an abuse or neglect case through the Department of Social Services, then a guardian ad litem may be appointed to represent your child.

Elizabeth Smyers is a certified guardian ad litem. The Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court may appoint her or she can offer her services as a guardian ad litem if your custody or visitation case is in the Circuit Court. When appointed as a guardian ad litem, Elizabeth will advocate for the child's best interest. Prior to trial, she will conduct an investigation which may include interviewing the child (if age appropriate), parents, extended family members and other relevant witnesses, such as counselors, teachers and doctors. Additionally, she may conduct home visits and review pertinent records, such as medical and school records.

Elizabeth also has experience as a guardian ad litem in infancy settlement cases.  When a minor is injured and has filed a lawsuit, prior to settling the lawsuit the court will appoint a guardian ad litem to make sure the settlement of the lawsuit is in the best interest of the minor.
